Zoodles suggests using your birth year, but I'd suggest choosing four numbers at random so your child is less likely to figure it out. The Dashboard is password protected by a four-digit code. The main parental controls are accessed through the Dashboard icon, which you can, confusingly, only access after first tapping the map icon. From there, you can track what your child has been using the tablet for, and how many Zoodles points they have earned. Finally, an icon in the upper right takes you to your child's profile.

Below that is the Toybox, which grants your child access to any apps you have installed and have given them permission to use. The main menu is a horizontally oriented cartoon jungle, and the top of the screen is home to icons for Books, Drawing, Games, and Videos.

From Adult Mode, simply tap on the Kid Mode button to launch Zoodles (Opens in a new window), an educational software platform for kids. Kid Mode is where Ellipsis really shines. It also has several indents on the back panel, which further improve your grip and add some style points. It comes with a thick light blue rubber bumper, which adds a good deal of grip, protecting the tablet from bumps and falls. The Ellipsis Kids ($249.99 at Verizon) (Opens in a new window) is a plain-looking black tablet that weighs 12.7 ounces and measures 8.1 by 4.9 by 0.4 inches (HWD). But if you can live without LTE (and the built-in children's software), the Amazon Fire ($49.99 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) is an excellent option for one-fifth the price. If you're looking for an LTE-compatible tablet to keep kids busy on long car rides, it's a solid choice. It certainly isn't the fastest slate out there, but it comes with lots of fun and educational kid-friendly content. But unlike most kids' tablets, the Ellipsis offers LTE coverage on Verizon's network, so you can get online anywhere, and not just where Wi-Fi is available.
